Dr Mairead Seymour recently addressed the Socio-Legal Speaker Series at DIT. Dr Seymour spoke about the experiences of young people on remand. Most fascinating were the links between the social reality of remands and the legal context. It seems that a lot of the time these are far apart. Her research should be required reading for legal professionals dealing with such young people as the indications are they are not been made aware of the processes and implications of remand. In my view, this is a major failing. Should lawyers also receive social-science type training?
