The Irish Times called today for reform of our prison system.
Arguing for greater investment in alternatives to custody, diverting those with psychiatric problems to mental health care rather than dumping them in prisons and addiction treatment rather than custody, the piece reaffirms the newspaper’s position on the prison issue.
We all know what the problems are and what needs to be done. But those with the power to do something don’t seem to be able or willing to take the action to achieve it. Minor tinkering with the system is no longer enough. A wholesale change in direction for Irish penal policy is needed.
